Fasching is Munich's carnival season, when locals don fancy dress and decorated floats parade through the city. Prepare for dancing in the streets, and plenty of delicious local beer. The season reaches its climax the week before Ash Wednesday.

Night of the Jumps

The Night of the Jumps, the world's largest international freestyle motocross tournament, comes to Munich's Olympiahalle as part of its world tour. Gravity-defying tricks, highjumps, pit bikes, quads and fireworks keep thousands of fans entertained.

Munich Ballet Week

The annual Munich Ballet Week showcases the talents of the Bavarian State Ballet with performances taking place at the Nationaltheater. Each year the festival tends to première a new work, sometimes especially commissioned for the event itself.

Verzaubert Film Weekend

The Verzaubert Film Weekend brings gay and lesbian cinema to the masses and travels to four major cities in Germany. This stop is in Munich. The festival reflects the changing dynamic of issues related to love and gender identity.

Lord of the Dance

Michael Flatley's Lord Of The Dance visits Munich's Kleine Olympiahalle as part of its final tour. This production is a whirl of fast movements, set in place by a tremendous sound and light system, featuring more than 50 dancers.

The BMW Open clay court tennis tournament at Munich's Iphitos Tennis Club offers a relaxed atmosphere and action from top ATP touring pros. Past winners include Berdych, Gonzalez and home-grown Phillip Kohlschreiber. Performance art and live music entertain between matches.

Spring Festival

The Frühlingsfest (Spring Festival) fills Munich's Theresienwiese with more than 100 fairground rides, beer tents and live music to keep the whole family entertained. Ride on the rollercoasters and merry-go-rounds, or munch on all manner of sticky sweets.

International Documentary Film Festival

Munich hosts its International Documentary Film Festival, one of the few festivals devoted to the subject, still a living medium in the cinemas of many countries. Screenings take place at museums, cultural centres and other Munich venues.

Draughtsmen in Rome

Rome became Italy's art centre in the 16th century and drew draughtsmen and painters from home and abroad keen to undertake commissions for its well-educated, wealthy public. Draughtsmen in Rome at Munich's Pinakothek der Moderne focuses on their new graphic techniques.

Munich Biennale

The Munich Biennale has a reputation for discovering new talent in contemporary opera and music theatre. Started by Hans Werner Henze in 1988, it has premièred numerous works, many of which have gone on to be produced by major international companies.

Rowing World Cup
May 2012 (annual)

The Rowing World Cup series is an annual competition made up of three international regattas a year. This, the first stage, is held along the Olympic-Regatta strip in Munich's northern Oberschleissheim district. Races include men's and women's single sculls and eights.

Prix Jeunesse International
May - Jun 2012 (biennial)

Bayerischer Rundfunk, the Bavarian broadcasting company in Munich, hosts Prix Jeunesse International, one of the world's biggest children's TV events. Prizes are awarded for fiction and non-fiction in three age groups, as well as for entertainment programmes aimed at adolescents.

Pentecost Festival

The Pentecost Festival at the Theatron stage presents young rock and pop talent from Germany and abroad in Munich's green Olympia park. Four or five bands perform each day in a festival atmosphere and the steep auditorium provides wonderful lake views.

Jews 45/90 From Here and There - Survivors from Eastern Europe

For those who survived the concentration camps of Nazi Germany, there often came further detention - in the Displaced Persons (DPs) camps. Munich's Jewish Museum presents Jews 45/90, which details individual stories that began in Eastern Europe but continued in and around postwar Munich.

Stadtgründungsfest

Fourteenth June 1158 was the date of Munich's founding by Duke Henry the Lion. The Stadtgründungsfest celebrates this birthday between Marienplatz and Odeonplatz with vast quantities of beer and sausages, music and street performances, and processions in colourful medieval costume.

BMW International Open

Golf's elite meet at the Golfclub Munchen Nord-Eichenried for the BMW International Open. The top ten European players are automatically selected to play in the Ryder Cup. Save winning a major, this competition is the pinnacle of a golfer's career.

Munich City Run

The Munich City Run takes runners in a circle from Marienplatz square, through the English Garden and across the Hofgarten. Events include a 5km walking route, a 2km kids' run, a 10km family run and a half marathon (21km).

Munich Film Festival

Munich Film Festival (Filmfest München) is one of Germany's biggest, screening a huge number of premières, retrospectives, TV movies and more. The festival is broadly non-competitive, and screens around 150 international films every year.

Thousands of excited spectators take to Munich's streets in lederhosen, feather boas and high heels to watch the Christopher Street Day parade. German and international artists perform and DJs spin tunes to get everyone in the mood for this two-day party.

Magdalenenfest

The Magdalenenfest is a cross between a family funfair and a market and takes place in the enormous 8000-seat Hirschgarten beer garden. Dating back to 1728, you can expect food stalls, pony rides and carousels to keep the whole family entertained.

Bike Expo

See how far cycling has come as a sport and hobby and check out the latest innovations in not only bikes themselves but urban and rural cycling. The four-day event takes place at Munich's Messe with the first two days open to trade only.

Munich Summer Theatre

The open-air Munich Summer Theatre returns to the scenic amphitheatre in Munich's English Garden. One play is performed over the four weekends and the event attracts around 8000 people. Bring a picnic and a blanket!

Munich Opera Festival

Held every summer since 1876, the Munich Opera Festival (Münchner Opernfestspiele) at the Nationaltheater features a vast programme of opera and ballet performances. A regular highlight for many is Opera For All, a free concert held outdoors on Max-Joseph-Platz square.

The 'Auer Dult' St James' Fair sets up shop on Munich's Mariahilfplatz square for its summertime stint. The traditional market-cum-fair, which dates back to the Middle Ages, offers knick-knack stalls for bargain hunters and a merry-go-round for kids.

Theatron Music Summer showcases the best of Munich's thriving live music scene, from cabaret to world music, classical and jazz. Over 100,000 spectators take their seats for the free outdoor concerts at the Theatron open-air theatre on the Olympic Lake.

Munich Blade Night

Around 10,000 inline skaters roll through the streets during the  Munich Blade Night, held every Monday night. There are five routes to choose from, each beginning from Am Bavariapark. You can hire skates, helmets and safety pads from the organisers.

Streetlife Festival

Munich's Leopoldstrasse and Ludwigstrasse, normally busy with motorised traffic, are car-free zones for the weekend of the Streetlife Festival. Around 250,000 gather to walk, talk, listen to music and talks and dance in the streets. There's plenty of good food too.

Over 60 of Munich's museums and galleries celebrate the new season, throwing open their doors for a weekend in September. Art lovers can enjoy a free comprehensive overview of contemporary art in a relaxed and inclusive environment.

The Munich Marathon starts on Ackermannstrasse and works its way anti-clockwise around the city. Watch runners dash around the Siegestor victory gate, through the leafy English Garden and through the Old Town before a sprint finish at Olympic Park.

Munich's Long Night of Museums sees around 90 city museums and galleries stay open through the evening until the early hours. Buy just one ticket and you get access to all participating institutions - there's even a specially organised shuttle bus.

Munich Indoors

The Munich Indoors equestrian event, held at the Olympiahalle, is the finale of the nationwide Riders Tour. On Friday and Saturday a programme of additional activities includes fancy dress, crowd participation and interaction, plus good-humoured family fun.
